MLOV Immigration and Sanctuary
Immigration means more than a concept for MLOV, it is a feeling and a collective ideology, it means the confluence of cultures, languages and many ways of conceiving our world, it also means the construction of a society that is dignified with the varied mix of groups and families that coming from different places we look for a dignified future without importing any type of status.
For MLOV Sanctuary is a physical, economic, social, spiritual and environmental space where all its population safely guarantees and develops its life, with access to all the resources that this space provides on equal terms, with dignity, and without any form of segregation or discrimination.
In this sense, MLOV accompanies the initiative and tends to make our City Washington DC integrally assume that sanctuary space for all its inhabitants.
We are an integral part of "Sanctuary DMV DC" which is a coalition of organizations dedicated to protecting immigrants and communities in the DMV areas (DC, Maryland and Virginia). is a solidarity group committed to supporting undocumented immigrants and marginalized communities, including those who are black, indigenous, Muslim, Latino and LGBTQ.
We also participate and accompany the network of shrines of Faith congregations and churches in the area that provide support and solidarity to neighbors, friends and relatives who fear being arrested, deported or profiled.
The basic job is to accompany all people who have contact with immigration offices and are at risk of deportation. We provide guidance, we go to local help networks to obtain legal assistance, we accompany families and people before immigration courts, we guide families and people detained by ICE, we accompany people to their immigration checks, we connect who requires them to service networks.
We also tend and lead so that the local administration establishes the concept in our city and becomes a reality that our city is a sanctuary for all its inhabitants.
MLOV has accompanied (along with legal teams and the Sanctuary networks) and assisted in the last months to more than 30 people with cases before the immigration courts in processes that go from their regular checkups before immigration, as well as deportation cuts.
Likewise, MLOV provides information and education to the community not only to protect and be able to act before the immigration authorities, but also educate them to be assumed as citizens and members of the community, we guide them to obtain their respective identification (ID ) and / or driving licenses, and at the same time they are guided in knowing and how to access the different systems. For example: health, education, housing and work in the city.
