After-School Youth Program Instructor (Part-time)

Many Languages One Voice (MLOV), was founded in 2010, and our mission is to foster the leadership and greater civic participation of immigrants and refugees who do not speak English as a primary language. We believe an actively engaged community that challenges existing inequities by dominant power is key to achieving systemic change. Thus, we support our members’ leadership and amplify the voice of our most vulnerable members to find solutions to the systemic racial inequities that impact their lives.

MLOV is a leading player in the immigrant rights and justice movement in DC and regularly builds partnerships and coalitions with wide-ranging stakeholders. In addition to nonprofits and community organizations, MLOV works with government officials, agencies, businesses, and worker groups to advance power-building of immigrant communities in DC.

MLOV’s Youth Programming focuses on providing immigrant youth with pathways to academic success, civic/social engagement, and leadership/empowerment through after-school and summer programming. Our programming provides a safe and empowering space for immigrant and English Learner youth, and helps youth build confidence around their identity, leadership and advocacy. After-School Program activities include homework support, structured lessons, group discussions, group projects, interactions with local policy makers, and ocassional field trips.

Youth Program High School Instructor: The Youth Program Instructor will be primarily responsible for facilitating in-person activities for MLOV’s After-School Youth Program, for middle school and high school students, mostly grades 7th - 10th, in partnership with a lead instructor, other program staff, interns, and/or volunteers.

This is a part-time, hourly, temporary position from October 1, 2023 - June 15, 2024, with the possibility of extension as a full-time role for the summer of 2024 (late June - mid August 2024). Payment for this role is at least $22 per hour. Given our programatic schedule, candidates must be available between 2 - 4 days per week between 4 pm - 7pm, and ocassionally on Saturday mornings/early afternoons, with schedule flexibility possible for the right candidate.

Overview of responsibilities:

• The Youth Program Instructor will be responsible for co-implementing youth in-person program activities on weekday evenings, 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm on topics provided by MLOV, in partnership with other program staff;
• Using MLOV’s youth program curriculum and/or resources obtained through independent research, implement meaningful and interactive activities for youth program participants;
• Establish rapport with youth, most of whom identify as as immigrants or children of immigrants;
• Assist with program set-up and tear-down before and after session;
• Collaborate in the development of lesson plans, as needed;
• Maintain a safe and supportive environment for all youth during lessons;
• Adhere to all program and MLOV organizational policies;

An ideal candidate characteristics:

• At least some post-secondary studies with focus in education, political science, sociology, social work, or related fields;
• At least 1 year of experience working directly with immigrant youth;
• Experience training groups of youth from under-resourced communities;
• Understanding of and experience with community organizing;
• Bilingual (English-Spanish) preferred;
• Possesses or willing to obtain the following background checks
  - Current check from DC Child and Family Services Agency (CFSA) Child Protection Registry (CPR)
  - Current check from Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Criminal Background Check
  - Current check from Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Criminal Background Check, and
  - Current check from National Sex Offender Registry (NSO).

• Team player and excellent communication skills;
