Many Languages One Voice (MLOV) is inviting applications from committed and passionate individuals for its Board of Directors. MLOV’s mission is to foster leadership and facilitate community-led initiatives to increase the meaningful inclusion and civic participation of people in the District of Columbia who do not speak English as their primary language. We approach this by using uniquely integrated strategies that raise awareness of, educate, consult with, advocate for, and organize around the rights of the District’s limited and non-English speakers.
MLOV incorporated in December 2010 and acquired its 501(c)(3) status in January 2012. The MLOV Board plays a crucial role in governance, fundraising, strategic planning, and supporting administrative and financial matters of the organization. Visit the MLOV website (www.mlovdc.org) for more information about our programs and initiatives.
ABOUT MLOV
MLOV envisions a District of Columbia that actively and meaningfully includes and embraces all voices in decisions that affect the lives of its people. We work to ensure equitable access and participation for and by the District’s limited and non-English proficient (LEP/NEP) communities in policy decisions that directly impact their quality of life as it pertains to education, health, and “language access.” MLOV focuses its efforts on three core strategies: advocacy, community organizing, and outreach/partnerships. MLOV is a member of the DC Language Access Coalition (DCLAC) – a local policy advocacy coalition comprised of 40+ community-based and civil rights
organizations – serves on the coalition’s Executive Committee, and administers DCLAC. With a dedicated staff, a core group of VISTAS and volunteers, and an office in Washington, DC, MLOV works daily to ensure that the LEP/ NEP communities of the District have a voice in their own livelihoods.
ABOUT THE MLOV BOARD
MLOV is committed to maintaining a Board of Directors that reflects the full diversity and vibrancy of the District’s ethnic communities. This is an exciting time for MLOV as it embarks on a new strategic plan, further develops its programs and expands its network of supporters.
Individuals with knowledge and expertise in the areas of community organizing, advocacy, fundraising/development, labor/employment law, communications, and financial governance are especially needed for the MLOV Board of Directors. Experience with LEP/NEP communities in DC
is desirable. Additionally, MLOV is actively seeking a new Director to serve as the 2013 Treasurer. New Directors will be voted onto the board between December 2012 and February 2013, on a rolling basis.
Among the expectations for Board Directors are the following:
- The MLOV Board of Directors meets approximately monthly at MLOV’s headquarters, 3166 Mt. Pleasant St., NW. It is expected that Directors will attend all board meetings and at least 2 organizational events per year.
- Directors serve two-year terms, with multiple terms possible by mutual agreement.
- Directors agree to make a financial contribution or raise funds equivalent to $1000 per year.
- Directors sign and adhere to a Conflict of Interest policy.
