We were excited to have so many of our members and supporters come together recently in celebrations of music, food, and friends to support MLOV in our work to make DC a Sanctuary for all of its communities! On Friday August 4th, MLOV held a fundraiser artist showcase at Bossa in Adams Morgan -- the event consisted of music by incredibly talented local artists Jesse Magenta, Los Gallos Negros, Rae Arcadia, Son Cosita Seria, and Forces. On Sunday, August 6th, we had round 2 in the form of a lively carne asada (BBQ) celebrating the victory of the #Matchbox5. At MLOV, we understand that community and community-led solutions are the most important aspect of our grassroots organizing work, and our community is what sustains efforts to make DC a Sanctuary for All..
Friday's event specifically was organized to highlight the successful culmination of MLOV's Summer Institute for Student Organizing (SISO) - the only program in DC specifically geared to building the organizing skills and support of local immigrant youth. After 6 weeks of learning and engaging organizing models to transform their education, our 12 SISO participants presented the main solutions in their Resolution to ensure safety and justice for immigrant students in DC schools in front of those gathered. Congratulations to all of our youth members who graduated from SISO 2017 and are geared up with their newly acquired organizing skills for launching their campaign this coming school year!
Last but not least last weekend we celebrated the bittersweet transition of Hannah Kane, our ruthless MLOV Worker Justice Organizer who has organized MLOV's Comité de Apoyo Laboral y Poder Obrero (Committee for Labor Solidarity and Worker Power) since its inception 5 years ago. As Hannah transitioned out of her role, she passed on the responsibilities of organizing our worker members to two incredible community organizers from our base -- Ana Rondón and Bruno Avila. We are sad to see Hannah leave MLOV, and wish her the best of luck in her new work and all her travels --- and at the same time, we excitedly welcome Ana and Bruno as the new organizers in continuing MLOV's work forward to defend immigrant worker’s rights!
Stay tuned to learn more about Ana & Bruno in upcoming posts!
