Last Friday, Get Up Stand Up2: Youth+Media Justice Summit united 50 youth organizers from across DC at MLOV's office. Youth leaders from Critical Exposure, DC Youth Poetry Slam Team, Empower DC, Gandhi Brigade, Latin American Youth Center and SMART were present.
After an invigorating performance of the POWER song, lead by SMART, the Summit was in full swing!
Youth organizers from Empower DC facilitated the first workshop on Root Cause Analysis. Participants contributed issues faced by young people in DC, which included: teen pregnancy, language access, cost of education, safety and more. The breakout session had participants discuss the connections between the issues and place a piece of tape between the issues. The resulting collage emphasized how our issues are intertwined, and the need for unity and solidarity among youth organizers.
Gandhi Brigade and DC Youth Poetry Slam Team led the next workshop on Media Production, in which the youth organizers produced a video letter to the President of the United States.
DC Youth Poetry Slam Team helped interested youth to construct their letters in poetry form. Then, Gandhi Brigade trained youth on how to deliver a message, as well as how to operate cameras and mics. After each youth voiced his/her concerns on video, s/he took his turn behind the camera and recorded the letter of a fellow youth organizer.
Stay tuned for the Tumblr release of the finalized video letters, later this week!
Thank you to everyone who helped make GUSU2 a success! MLOV looks forward to next summit for youth organizers in DC!
